What Is an Export Packing List?
A packing list is one of the core shipping documents in international trade, alongside the commercial invoice and bill of lading. While the commercial invoice states the value of goods for customs and payment purposes, the packing list details exactly how the shipment is physically organized: how many cartons, what's inside each one, the weight and dimensions of every carton, and the total gross and net weight of the shipment. Freight forwarders, customs officials, and the receiving warehouse all rely on it to verify a shipment without having to open every box.
Why Carton-Level Detail Matters
Customs authorities and freight forwarders use the packing list to cross-check against the commercial invoice and the physical shipment, and discrepancies (wrong carton count, mismatched weights) are one of the most common causes of customs delays and holds. A properly formatted packing list — with shipper and consignee details, carton numbers, dimensions, and weights clearly laid out — reduces the chance of a shipment getting flagged for manual inspection, and speeds up receiving once it arrives at the destination warehouse.
